I have discussed the Apple iPad several times in the past few weeks, mostly with my brother Blake Weber. I think anyone who owns an iPhone or an iPod Touch wants to wrap their mind around why they would want this sleek new gadget. We started listing some of the iPhone Apps that we really like for what we thought could be much more useful on a bigger screen.
Mail, Photos, iBook, or anything Apple features in their commercials for the iPad strike me as obvious apps that would be more useful, but something that Blake & I agreed on that would greatly improve is board game apps. My sister & brother-in-law recently introduced us to Settlers of Catan & without a doubt, the iPad would enhance the experience of board game apps similar to this, especially if played with friends.
According to Apple, the iPad will feature “12 new innovative apps especially designed for the iPad.” However, some techies speculate that the iPad may not arrive with everything you thought it would. Kevin Fox wrote a great app comparison of the iPad, iPhone, & iPod Touch.
I still think this invention gives a great deal of promise to visual artists out there. In the last article I wrote on the iPad, I gave a list of reasons on how I thought it could improve the work of a photographer. Beyond that, picture how reading magazines or the news will change. Imagine if you flipped a page in Sports Illustrated, touched a photo with your finger, & it began to talk or played video. Your favorite magazine would take on a whole new life & with an invention like the iPad, you’d still get to turn the page like you always have. Each magazine can have their own app and charge by subscription, seek out advertising, or both.
I believe that we will witness a whole new era of how magazines, news, writers, journalists, photographers, & designers present digital media. I have a feeling that we are on the edge of something big here.
